The Ten Commandments

“If you love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

God delivered His holy law to Moses upon Mount Sinai.

These commandments teach us our duties toward God and our
neighbour and lead faithful souls along the path of
righteousness.

The wording below follows the
Douay-Rheims Bible, principally Exodus 20:2–17,
arranged according to the traditional Catholic numbering.

  1. I am the Lord thy God.
    Thou shalt not have strange gods before Me.
  2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
  3. Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day.
  4. Honour thy father and thy mother.
  5. Thou shalt not kill.
  6. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  7. Thou shalt not steal.
  8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
  9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife.
  10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s goods.

“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house: neither shalt
thou desire his wife, nor his servant, nor his handmaid,
nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is his.”

commandments all the days of our lives.
