Sleeping World

The broad way to destruction and the narrow way to life

A Warning to the Sleeping World

An Appeal to Awaken, Seek the Truth, and Return to Almighty God

When I open the Holy Bible, I know that I am reading truth. Not the changing opinions of men, nor the passing philosophies of the world, but the sacred Word of Almighty God.

Truth gives us reason to trust. Trust strengthens faith, and faith opens the door to wisdom. Yet wisdom does not begin with man’s intelligence, education, or worldly accomplishments. It begins with the fear of the Lord.

As we read in Proverbs 9:10:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is prudence.”

The fear of the Lord is a profound reverence for our Creator, an acknowledgment of His supreme authority, and the humility to recognize that without Him we are nothing. For those who sincerely seek the truth, the (Douay-Rheims) Holy Bible is a golden gem, a treasure of immeasurable worth. Its sacred pages illuminate the narrow road leading to eternal salvation, a road so easily obscured by the distractions and temptations of this world.

God has given us the light. The question is whether we are willing to follow it.

The Wisdom of God and the Pride of Man

From childhood, we are taught to place great confidence in human knowledge. We study history, science, philosophy, and the accomplishments of civilization. Yet how often are we encouraged to examine the condition of our immortal souls?

Man has learned to measure the distance between the stars, yet so often neglects to examine the distance between his own soul and Almighty God. There is nothing wrong with discovering the wonders of creation. But there is grave danger when human knowledge becomes an object of pride and man begins to imagine that his understanding is sufficient to explain the purpose of his existence.

Man may congratulate himself upon his inventions and technological achievements, yet he has not created the laws of nature by which they operate, nor the elements from which they are made. He has merely discovered and employed what Almighty God has already brought into existence.

And still, amid these accomplishments, the Holy Bible is so often cast aside. What a tragedy that mankind should devote so much effort to understanding the world while neglecting the sacred treasure that teaches him how to save his soul.

The Precious Gift of the Catholic Faith

The Holy Scriptures contain depths of wisdom that no man can exhaust in his earthly lifetime. Saint Augustine, one of the greatest Doctors of the Catholic Church, devoted his extraordinary intellect to the study of divine truth. Yet his writings reveal profound humility before the mysteries of Almighty God.

If such a great Doctor approached Scripture with humility, how much more should we? The Holy Bible contains parables, prophecies, and mysteries that demand careful study, prayer, and respect for the wisdom handed down through the centuries. We must never confuse our private interpretations with the authentic teachings of the Church.

And here we must recognize something of tremendous importance. The Holy Roman Catholic faith is a precious gift from Almighty God.

It cannot be earned through intelligence or human accomplishments. Faith is a supernatural gift of grace. Not every soul has received the same opportunities to know the Catholic faith, and those who have received this treasure should respond with gratitude and humility, never pride.

The Holy Catholic Church is the Bride of Jesus Christ, His spotless Bride, holy and without blemish in the sanctity she receives from her divine Founder.

As Saint Paul writes in Ephesians 5:27:

“That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish.”

Though her earthly members are sinners in need of repentance, the sacred truths entrusted to Christ’s Church remain worthy of our fidelity. What an extraordinary responsibility rests upon those who have received this gift!

The Narrow Gate and the Danger of Spiritual Blindness

Look around at the condition of the world. Mankind has become increasingly confident in its own abilities, its institutions, and its power to shape the future. Yet material progress is not the same as spiritual progress.

Man has taken the reins into his own hands, convinced that he knows best. He wishes to determine for himself what is right and wrong, while forgetting that he did not create himself, give himself life, or establish the laws governing creation.

Truth does not become false because it is unpopular, nor does falsehood become truth because multitudes embrace it. There is an old expression that cream rises to the top of milk. So too, truth has a way of coming to light. Yet the greatest truth mankind must confront is that every soul will one day stand before Almighty God.

Our Lord Jesus Christ warned us in Matthew 7:13–14:

“Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!”

These are the words of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. How many give serious consideration to them? How many pursue their daily occupations, possessions, and pleasures without once considering where their immortal souls will spend eternity?

The multitude does not determine the truth, and the popularity of a way of life offers no assurance that it is pleasing to Almighty God.

We must each ask ourselves: Am I walking the narrow road, or am I merely following the crowd?

The Reality of Satan and the Practice of Virtue

The modern world has learned to laugh at the existence of the devil. Yet Satan is not an imaginary character. He is a fallen angel whose desire is to turn souls away from Almighty God.

Saint Peter warns us in 1 Peter 5:8:

“Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.”

Satan possesses powers proper to his angelic nature, originally given by God, who created him good. Yet he is not equal to Almighty God, and his power remains limited by divine authority. We should neither dismiss his existence nor become so preoccupied with him that we forget the infinite power of our Creator.

Consider how much effort people devote to becoming proficient in earthly pursuits. An athlete trains continually. A musician practices repeatedly. A craftsman spends years perfecting his skill. Why then should we imagine that the spiritual life requires no effort?

How can we grow in virtue without practicing virtue? How can we develop a life of prayer if we seldom pray? How can we amend our lives if we refuse to acknowledge our sins?

There is an old saying: You get out what you put in. Yet salvation is not something we earn through effort alone. It is the gift of God’s grace, with which we must cooperate.

We must pray, practice charity and humility, resist temptation, examine our consciences, and receive the sacraments worthily. And when we fall, we must rise again, seek forgiveness, and continue along the narrow road.

The Mercy of God and the Urgency of Repentance

There is no sinner so hardened that he should despair of the mercy of Almighty God. A man may have spent years living in grave sin, neglecting his soul and turning away from his Creator. Yet while he remains alive, he can repent sincerely, amend his life, and seek reconciliation with God.

Our Lord tells us in Luke 15:7:

“I say to you, that even so there shall be joy in heaven upon one sinner that doth penance, more than upon ninety-nine just who need not penance.”

But we must never confuse God’s mercy with permission to continue living in sin. True repentance requires sorrow for our offences, a sincere purpose of amendment, and the willingness to abandon what separates us from God.

Almighty God knows the innermost movements of every human heart. He knows our intentions, weaknesses, struggles, and whether our repentance is sincere.

The tragedy is that so many continue postponing their return to Him, imagining there will always be another day. But who among us has been promised tomorrow?

Awake, O Man, Before It Is Too Late

This is the very reason these words have been written. This is a warning to the sleeping world. Not to drive souls into despair, but to awaken the conscience before the opportunity for repentance has passed.

The world is filled with noise, confusion, and distractions. Things once hidden come to light, and long-held assumptions are questioned. Yet amid it all, the most important question remains:

Where will my immortal soul spend eternity?

We do not know when our Lord Jesus Christ will return in glory. No man knows the day or the hour. But we have been commanded to remain watchful.

In Matthew 24:42, our Lord warns:

“Watch ye therefore, because you know not what hour your Lord will come.”

And Saint Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:2:

“For yourselves know perfectly, that the day of the Lord shall so come, as a thief in the night.”

Even if Christ’s Second Coming should not occur during our earthly lives, each one of us must still face death and the judgment that follows. Every hour brings us nearer to eternity.

And yet how many continue sleeping upon the broad road, unconcerned about where it leads? How many prepare for everything except the moment when they must stand before Almighty God?

Our Lord asks in Mark 8:36:

“For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul?”

Consider that question carefully. No earthly possession is worth the loss of eternal life. No passing pleasure is worth the loss of heaven.

The time to examine our conscience is now. The time to abandon sin, return to prayer, seek the sacraments, and amend our lives is now. Not because we know the hour of Christ’s return, but precisely because we do not.

Do not mistake God’s patience for His approval of sin, nor His mercy for a promise that repentance can safely be postponed.

If you have neglected your prayers, return to them. If you have been away from the Sacrament of Penance, seek reconciliation. If worldly concerns have occupied your heart, make room once again for Almighty God.

The narrow road may demand sacrifice, but what sacrifice in this passing world can compare with the promise of eternal life?

The Holy Bible remains a golden gem of truth. The Holy Catholic faith remains a precious gift. And the mercy of Almighty God remains open to the repentant sinner.

Awaken, dear soul, while you still have time. For the world and all its passing glory will one day be gone, but your immortal soul will endure forever.

May Almighty God, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, grant us the grace to awaken from spiritual slumber, repent sincerely of our sins, persevere in His holy Catholic faith, and remain faithful to Him until our final breath.

Amen.
